Comprehensive Verification from Documentation to Component Appearance


A thorough visual inspection starts by confirming that incoming components match the declared procurement information. Inspectors review supplier documentation, certificates of conformity (COC), purchase records, manufacturer labels, lot numbers, date codes, and traceability information to ensure consistency between the physical products and their documented source. Any discrepancies in documentation or traceability may indicate unauthorized sourcing or require additional verification.

Packaging is then evaluated to confirm compliance with manufacturer standards. Moisture barrier bags, vacuum sealing, ESD protection, reels, trays, tubes, humidity indicator cards, desiccants, factory labels, and tamper-evident seals are carefully examined for signs of improper handling, repackaging, or storage damage. Since packaging often provides valuable
evidence of a component's handling history, abnormalities at this stage can serve as early indicators of potential quality risks.

Following documentation and packaging verification, inspectors perform an external visual examination of each component. Package surfaces, terminals, and overall physical condition are assessed for scratches, cracks, discoloration, corrosion, oxidation, contamination, bent leads, mechanical damage, or evidence of excessive wear. Particular attention is given to manufacturer markings, including logos, fonts, laser engraving, ink quality, lot codes, date codes, country of origin markings, and pin-one indicators. Inconsistencies in marking style, alignment, or print quality may suggest remarking, resurfacing, or counterfeit activity.


Digital Microscopy and Dimensional Verification


Many defects cannot be reliably identified with the naked eye alone. High-resolution digital microscopy provides enhanced visibility, allowing inspectors to examine surface textures, laser engravings, mold characteristics, coating consistency, and fine structural details at significant magnification. This process helps reveal subtle indicators such as sanding marks, resurfacing, blacktopping, repaired leads, or abnormal mold finishes that may indicate refurbished or previously used components.

Lead condition is also evaluated under magnification to verify plating quality, coplanarity, oxidation, solder residue, deformation, and other signs of mechanical stress or prior assembly. Since lead integrity directly affects solderability and assembly reliability, this inspection plays a critical role in determining whether components remain suitable for production.

To further validate authenticity, critical package dimensions—including body size, package thickness, lead pitch, and terminal geometry—are measured using precision instruments and compared against manufacturer datasheets and applicable JEDEC specifications. Consistent dimensions help confirm that components conform to the intended package type, while unexpected deviations may indicate incorrect packaging, counterfeit products, or manufacturing anomalies.
